Native American Heritage Day for the year 2023 is celebrated/observed on Friday, November 25th. There are until the next observance.

The day following Thanksgiving, November 26, is designated as National Native American Heritage Day. On this day, American Indians are given special recognition for their diverse cultures, accomplishments, contributions, and legacies. America’s history began with Native Americans, and the bald eagle on the United States shield is an Iroquois symbol. On this day, we can honor their traditional clothes and dishes, as well as speak out against the terrible wrongs they have had to go through.

With rituals and activities, Native American Heritage Day urges Americans of all backgrounds to properly respect indigenous traditions. Schools are also told to help students learn more about Native Americans by doing activities in the classroom that focus on their history, contributions, and successes.

The Native American Heritage Day Act of 2009 was first enacted by the United States House of Representatives, with technical changes made by a unanimous consent vote in the United States Senate. The House of Representatives voted unanimously to re-pass the law, incorporating the Senate’s changes. On October 30, 2009, President Barack Obama signed the Act into law.

Native American Heritage Day and Month provide an excellent opportunity for Indigenous people to educate the public about their cultures. Today, more than ever, they are leading the cultural conversation, celebrating their history by sporting traditional footwear (“rocking the moccasin”) and shining a focus on the varied indigenous groups.
